When Omar (not his real name) arrived in the United States in 2023, he carried with him something that could not fit inside a suitcase: a lifetime of experience helping others.
A refugee from Afghanistan, Omar fled his homeland with his wife and five young children in search of safety and a new beginning. Before immigrating, he served as a Case Manager supporting the United States Army, helping individuals navigate complex situations with compassion, professionalism, and integrity. His dedicated service earned him a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV), giving his family the opportunity to begin a new life in America.
But like so many refugees, starting over proved far more challenging than simply arriving in a new country.
Despite many years of professional experience, Omar faced unfamiliar systems, language barriers, cultural differences, and the daunting task of rebuilding his career while providing for his family. The credentials and experience that had defined his professional life in Afghanistan did not translate into employment in the United States.
Determined to move forward, he received support from JVS SoCal’s Refugee Employment & Acculturation Services (REAS). Under REAS, he was an Office Clerk with partner agency Catholic Charities of Los Angeles (CCLA). While the position differed from the career he had built overseas, Omar embraced the opportunity as an important first step toward rebuilding his future.
His work ethic quickly stood out.
Reliable, eager to learn, and committed to serving others, Omar impressed supervisors with his dedication. Within just three months, his performance opened the door to something he had hoped for since arriving in the United States:, a chance to return to the profession he loved.
He was hired as a Case Manager with CCLA’s Afghan Newcomer Program, where he now supports refugees and immigrants experiencing many of the same challenges he once faced himself. Having lived through the refugee journey, Omar understands the fears, uncertainty, and resilience required to begin again in a new country. That shared experience allows him to build trust and offer guidance with empathy and authenticity.
His success continued to grow.
After nine months, he earned another promotion, accepting a Case Manager position with a youth program at a partner America’s Job Center of California (AJCC). Today, he helps young people overcome obstacles, access resources, and build brighter futures, continuing a lifelong commitment to serving vulnerable communities.
Omar’s journey reflects the goals of JVS SoCal’s REAS program: helping refugees move beyond survival toward meaningful employment and long-term self-sufficiency. With the right support, determination, and opportunity, he transformed the challenges of displacement into a renewed sense of purpose.
