Starr’s inspiring journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of community support. After years of physically demanding work at the post office, Starr decided to return to her true passion—healthcare—with the help of the JVS SoCal HealthWorks program.
Starr’s path to JVS SoCal began unexpectedly. She had saved $3,000 to pay for a private CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) program, determined to pursue her goal. However, Thanks to our Veterans First Program, she learned about HealthWorks, a free training opportunity that could provide the same education without the financial burden. Initially skeptical, Starr was shocked to discover that the program was truly free- no hidden costs, no strings attached.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Starr recalled. “I was ready to pay, but they told me, ‘No, you don’t have to.’”
Starr’s return to education wasn’t without struggles. As someone who wasn’t tech-savvy, she faced difficulties navigating online coursework. Frustrated and overwhelmed, she nearly quit.
“I cried on camera,” Starr admitted. “But my instructor encouraged me to keep going. “Determined not to give up, Starr took extra computer classes on her own time to improve her skills. Her persistence paid off, and she successfully completed the program.
A New Career with Purpose
Today, Starr works at Inter Community Care in Long Beach, where she fulfills her dream of caring for those in need. Having previously worked with autistic and developmentally disabled individuals at Fairview Developmental Center, Starr’s compassion and dedication have always been at the heart of her career.
“If I’m going to work hard,” she said, “I’d rather be helping someone who can’t help themselves.”
Starr credits JVS SoCal for not only helping her achieve her career goals but also giving her the means to support her family. As a mother to a 19-year-old son studying Mechanical Engineering at California State University, Northridge, Starr’s new career has brought her peace of mind.
“Every time my son calls, it’s about $1,500 or $2,000,” she shared. “Knowing I can work and provide for him- that’s everything.”
Starr now proudly shares her JVS SoCal experience with others, encouraging those seeking career growth to explore the program.
“JVS SoCal is for people who are ready to help themselves,” she says. “If you’re willing to put in the effort, they will support you 100%.” Starr’s journey shows that with determination, support, and hard work, new beginnings are always possible thanks to nonprofit organizations like JVS SoCal.
