Earlier in her career of many years in film editing, Laura Behary was part of large crews that cut and spliced film in darkrooms. Laura took some time away from the workforce to raise her young children in the early 2000s, one of whom has special needs. When she wanted to get back into the workforce, it was like the technology and skills of film editing had leapfrogged her.
Work in the film industry has always been episodic, so it was not a surprise to Laura that projects just didn’t fall into her lap despite her extensive network. No longer were crews 10 or 15 people, but rather one or two people doing film sequencing and non-linear editing in digital formats.
She was trying to get back into work, as many women have after a family-oriented stage in life, and the barriers felt insurmountable. When the pandemic hit, the economy took a nosedive and Laura was despondent.
Thanks to an innovative program JVS SoCal conducted in partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles, Laura took a social anxiety class where she learned about additional job readiness and vocational training opportunities.
When she heard about JVS SoCal’s CareerWork$ Medical, she saw the chance to break into a growing field with abundant prospects.
Laura joined and completed the program. After her graduation, she interviewed for open positions with RadNet, a leading medical imaging firm and JVS SoCal’s employer partner. She was offered a job the next day.
Since joining RadNet she has been promoted to Clinical Project Lead and she has increased her salary by more than 10%, helping her provide for herself and her family. Laura credits JVS SoCal with helping empower her in the workforce and bringing her and her family stability.
“I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to my employer, RadNet. Their collaboration with JVS SoCal’s CareerWork$Medical has been lifechanging; offering me a chance to grow both personally and professionally,” says Laura.
