JVS SoCal team member Emilio Slu lost his home in Altadena when the Eaton Fire devastated his community on January 7, 2025. Forced to flee with only his medications, he suddenly faced homelessness—the same crisis he helps veterans and their families overcome as Intake Specialist for the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP).
Thanks to the swift action and critical emergency grant from The Change Reaction, Emilio was able to secure housing and begin rebuilding his life. The compassion and care shown by his colleagues and a valuable JVS SoCal partner helped him restore stability during an incredibly difficult time.
A year after the catastrophic L.A. fires, we share Emilio’s experience as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing by one another in times of crisis, and how community support can make all the difference when it’s needed most.
