BankWork$ opens door for graduate’s path to becoming a mortgage loan officer

Before enrolling in the JVS SoCal’s BankWork$ program, Angel Mendoza was juggling various jobs while studying for the NMLS exam to become a mortgage loan officer.

Driven by a strong sense of purpose, Angel’s long-term goal was clear: “I want to represent the unrepresented when it comes to housing.” She viewed access to housing as a fundamental need and felt called to make a difference by helping others thrive through financial support and home ownership opportunities.

However, despite passing the financial services licensing exam, Angel found it difficult to break into the mortgage industry. “I applied to some brokerages, and it was hard because they wanted people that were seasoned. I didn’t know how to get experience,” she shares. Frustrated but not discouraged, Angel saw banking as a steppingstone into the industry. That’s when her sister introduced her to BankWork$ a turning point in her journey.

“The program really was the number one support for me as I was trying to develop myself,” says Angel. “It was beyond banking — it was self-development and professionalism.”

The support she received wasn’t just academic. JVS SoCal provided her with a laptop and even a quiet place to study — resources she didn’t have before. “That was great,” she adds with genuine appreciation.

The fact that the program was free left a lasting impact on Angel. “It was very, very important for me,” she emphasized. “I didn’t have a laptop, and they gave me one. That helped so much.” These seemingly small gestures created a stable environment where Angel could focus fully on her goals.

Now, thanks to the BankWork$ program, Angel feels more equipped and empowered than ever. When asked how she would describe the program to someone uncertain about their path, Angel responds passionately: “If you don’t know which way you’re going, you should definitely contact JVS SoCal… they’re going to give you the ins and outs of everything in your professional life.”

Today, Angel sees BankWork$ not just as a program, but as a launchpad. “This has been the most important step,” she says. “Taking the NMLS test was important, but BankWork$ has made the most impact.”

Angel took the first step to fulfilling her goals, as she starts her banking career as part of Priority One Credit Union.

Angel’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, training, and belief in oneself, anything is possible. Her journey is far from over… in fact, it’s just beginning.
