Scarlett Medina was working a warehouse job and searching for something more meaningful. She knew she wanted a career connected to healthcare, one where she could grow professionally and make a real difference, but she wasn’t sure how to get there.
“I wanted to pursue a career more in medical, maybe billing,” Scarlett shares. “I just didn’t know where to start.”
Her path became clearer thanks to family member. Scarlett learned about MediWork$ (formerly known as CareerWork$ Medical) through her aunt, a graduate of JVS SoCal’s BankWork$ program. Hearing firsthand about the support and opportunity JVS SoCal provided gave Scarlett the confidence to enroll.
From the beginning, the program exceeded her expectations. “Honestly, it was a really good experience,” she says. “I gained a lot of knowledge.”
Scarlett credits much of her success to her instructor, whose guidance made a lasting impact. “She was very knowledgeable and shared everything with us. She really assisted me in the long run.”
Like many MediWork$ participants, Scarlett worried about finding a job with limited experience after graduation. But the program didn’t just prepare her academically, it helped her transition into the workforce. “It can be difficult getting a job when you don’t have much experience,” explains Scarlett. “But my instructor is the one who helped me get my job. I’m very grateful.”
Today, Scarlett works as a Support Specialist at Shields for Families, supporting high-risk families through case management and mental health–focused services. The role has been transformative.
“What I like most is working with high-risk clients,” she adds. “I realized that I really enjoy this work, it’s what I want to do.”
Many of the skills Scarlett uses daily came directly from MediWork$. From professional communication to understanding healthcare systems, the program equipped her with tools she continues to rely on. Just as important was the encouragement she received.
“The program opened our eyes to how many opportunities are out there and made sure we didn’t lose hope,” she says.
Reflecting on her journey, Scarlett is grateful not only for the instruction but also for the sense of community. “I’d like to thank my classmates too. We all got somewhere, and we enjoyed the program.”
Looking ahead, Scarlett’s ambitions continue to grow. Inspired by her current role, she’s now interested in becoming a hospital social worker, combining her passion for healthcare with hands-on client support in a hospital setting.
