Turning setbacks into success: Rita Elder’s journey with JVS SoCal

When Rita Elder was laid off after years of dedicated work in human resources for large entertainment companies, the experience was both shocking and deeply disappointing. Like many professionals impacted by corporate mergers and layoffs, Rita suddenly found herself questioning what came next and how to rebuild after losing a role she had invested so much of herself in.

“I had big goals,” says Rita. “I was looking forward to growing there and making a difference. When that ended so abruptly, it was incredibly hard.”

At the same time, she was balancing personal responsibilities at home. She lives with her elderly mother, helping care for her and managing daily needs. With uncertainty about her career and the pressure of supporting her family, Rita knew she needed a new direction, one that aligned with both her values and her strengths.

That opportunity came when Rita learned about JVS SoCal’s MediWork$ (formerly known as CareerWork$ Medical) program through a WorkSource Center while receiving unemployment services. Although she had never worked in healthcare before, the program immediately resonated with her.

“I’m a very compassionate and empathetic person,” explains Rita. “My previous work didn’t always allow me to show that side of myself. Healthcare felt like the right fit.”

Once enrolled, Rita found much more than training. She found encouragement, clarity, and community. She was especially impressed by the program’s curriculum and facilitator, who made complex material easy to understand and apply.

“The information really stuck with me,” says Rita. “Week to week, it all built in a way that made sense.”

Equally impactful was the support system. Rita described the environment as cohesive and uplifting, a place where peers and instructors worked together to ensure everyone succeeded.

“We talked through the hard parts together,” she adds. “It was a truly supportive experience.”

Today, Rita is a proud MediWork$ graduate, equipped with new skills and renewed confidence. Her journey has come full circle as she recently returned to JVS SoCal qas a guest speaker at the 2025 Woman to Woman Conference, where she shared her story to inspire others navigating career transitions.

Looking ahead, Rita remains focused on her purpose: making a positive impact wherever she goes.

“This program helped propel me forward,” she says. “I know I can bring my experience and what I learned here to truly make a difference.”
