A former communications specialist, Solomon Moon had reached a crossroads in their career. Burnt out by the inconsistency of past jobs and yearning for a more direct way to affect people’s lives, they stumbled upon JVS SoCal’s HealthWorks program while browsing the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles website.
“I didn’t know how I was going to afford school,” says Solomon who was looking to transition into transitioning to healthcare. “When I learned the program was free, it was perfect timing, he said”
When Solomon Moon first walked through the doors of JVS SoCal’s HealthWorks program, they were nervous but determined. They quickly became a standout student, excelled academically, received glowing feedback from instructors, and even stepped into a leadership role among their peers. Through their clinical experience at a local Jewish nursing home, Solomon discovered the profound impact they could have on others.
But Solomon’s journey into healthcare wasn’t just about acquiring new skills- it was about rediscovering a passion that had been ignited years ago. During the pandemic, Solomon suffered a spinal injury that needed extensive pain management. It was there that they encountered a music therapist for the first time. “I realized that music therapy could make such a difference,” they explained. “I learned that social workers could also be music therapists, and that opened a door for me to pursue something I’ve wanted to do for years.”
Now, as a team member at Belmont Village-Hollywood, Solomon is applying their new skills as a Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) employee. In this role, they guide caregivers, assist with patient duties, and provide leadership and encouragement to their teammates. Looking ahead, they hope to become Lead PAL and eventually train for their dream career as a music therapist.
Solomon credits the HealthWorks program- and the unwavering support of their instructor, Paola- with helping them transform their life. “This program is amazing,” they said. “The instructors and the experience were incredible, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for their next career.”
From overcoming burnout to embracing a new passion, Solomon’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of programs like HealthWorks. Their story is one of transformation, leadership, and a deep commitment to helping others- proof that it’s never too late to chart a new path.
For Solomon Moon, the future is bright, filled with music, healing, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of others.
