From an early age, Robert Bermudez had a strong interest in numbers. However, as a second-generation immigrant, he lacked the resources to pursue higher education. Being the oldest of three siblings in the family, he felt responsible for helping his parents by contributing to the household but also looked forward to the day he could achieve independence.
“I was living with my mom, my dad and my two younger brothers. I didn’t have a car, so I had to take the bus everywhere I went.” After graduating high school, Robert took low-wage jobs. He was working at a movie theater. “You know, ripping ticket stubs…It got to the point where I just didn’t see any advancement.”
He got a break when he learned about the BankWork$ career training program where he could tap into his love for numbers. Robert learned many aspects of the banking industry; among them, balancing a cash drawer and keeping good relationships with clients.
Robert completed the eight-week course and got hired at Banc of California soon after graduation. Within a few years, he became a Senior Relationship Manager and attributes his success to the JVS SoCal staff that taught him fundamentals of banking and essential career skills. “I feel more confident… that confidence is something that I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life. I couldn’t have done this without JVS Bankwork$. It changed my life.”
Robert Bermudez was recognized with the Inspiration Award at the 23rd Strictly Business Award Dinner in 2022.
